William R. Bedford Jr. of West Scranton died Thursday afternoon in the VNA Hospice Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He and his wife, the former Shirley Riegal, would have celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary June 26.

Born in Scranton, son of the late William R. Sr. and Wanda Edwards Bedford, he was educated in Scranton schools, and was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1967. He was also a graduate of Johnson School of Technology, where he became a welder. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, and also served in the Army Reserve. Before his retirement, he was employed as a welder for numerous area manufacturing companies. He was a member of the VFW and the DAV.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. His daughter was the apple of his eye. He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Also surviving are a daughter, Stacey Rose and husband, Tim, Scranton; a grandson, Michael William Surplus, Scranton; four brothers, Harry Bedford and wife, Rose, Scranton; Jack Bedford and wife, Kim, Bethlehem; Joseph Bedford and wife, Scarlet, Vestal, N.Y.; and Paul Bedford and wife, Amy, Scranton; a sister, Susan Salvage, Scranton; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; a mother in-law, Bernice Bertig, Stroudsburg; and brother-in-law, Thomas Bertig and wife, Maribeth, Lake Ariel.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carl J. Savino Funeral Home, 157 S. Main Ave., Scranton, with services at the funeral home at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Joseph P. Rafferty, pastor of the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Dallas. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Elmhurst.
Friends may call Monday, 5 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday, 9 until the time of service.
