William R. Shimansky, 77, of Newark, Del., died at home on Thursday morning. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irene.

Born Dec. 6, 1935, in Courtdale, he was the son of the late Stanley and Anna Shimansky. He served with distinction during the Korean War as a member in the 11th and 82nd Airborne D-wing in the mid-1950s. He was employed as a store manager by F.W. Woolworth Co. for 27 years, was a former member of the Elks Club for many years, recently a member of the American Legion and a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church for 27 years.

He enjoyed gardening and learning about history. William will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather known to offer a generous helping hand to anyone in need. His legacy lives on through his family.

He is also survived by two children, daughter, Sharon and her husband, Joseph, and their daughter, Nicole Terranova; and his son, William "Bill" Shimansky and his wife, Juana, and daughter, Ana.

Family and friends are welcome to a viewing on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear, Del., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30. Burial will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Del.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to either the VFW Post 475, 100 Veterans Way, Newark, DE 19711 or the family's church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
