Alys T. Furtaw, age 90, of East China Twp., died October 23, 2013. She was born April 18, 1923 in Port Huron to the late Theodore and Alys Bathey.
Alys married Walker Furtaw on December 29, 1950 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death in 2009.
Alys graduated from Port Huron High School and received her teaching certificate and Master's Degree from Central Michigan University. She taught in the Port Huron, Marysville and East China School Districts and was principal at Washington Elementary School, Ward Cottrell Elementary School and Palms Elementary School in East China School District. During her time as a teacher she also worked for the Michigan State University Elementary Intern Program, helping to develop new teachers. Her career as a teacher and administrator spanned 42 years.
Alys was a former member of Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron and St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Marine City.
She is survived by her daughter and son in law; Nancy and Richard Ameel, grandson; Mark (Rebecca) Ameel, and great grandchildren; Walker and Claire Ameel.
She was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter; Jennifer Ameel and sister; Natalie Smith.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be conducted Friday October 25th at 1:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. The family will receive visitors prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Marine City Library.
