Donald J. Markel Cottrellville Twp. Donald J. Markel, age 90, of Cottrellville Twp., died April 24, 2013. He was born April 21, 1923 in Cottrellville Twp. to the late Albert and Mary Markel. Donald served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was decorated with 3 bronze stars a good conduct ribbon and a victory medal. He married Betty Misany on January 24, 1947 in Marine City. Donald owned and operated Markel's Egg Factory for over 22 years, he had a lifelong love for farming in this area and worked many years at Alloys in Algonac. He was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Church and also a member of the VFW, Port Huron. He is survived by his wife of 66 years Betty Markel; children, William Markel, Daniel (Gail) Markel, Gail Pegg, Mark Markel (fiance Chris) and Julie (Duane) Osterland; grandchildren, Sarah Markel, Derrick Markel, Travis, Trever and Becca Osterland; great grandchildren, Kelsey and Emily; sisters, Viola Endres and Barbara Haack; and brother, Norman Markel; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother in law, Fred Pegg. Funeral services will be conducted Monday April 29th at 12:00 noon at Our Lady on the River Parish, Holy Cross Church, Marine City. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visiting hours are Sunday 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home and Monday 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church prior to mass.
