Gary Wayne Smith, age 78, of Burtchville, died April 8, 2014. He was born on January 10,1936 in Detroit to the late Wayne and Yvonne Smith. He married Eloise Jane Sanger on October 25, 1958 in St.Clair. She died April 26, 2011.
Gary retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years. He served 2 tours in Vietnam. When attached to MCB-5 in Vietnam he received the purple heart combat action ribbon. RVN service and campaign offensive stars/ribbons. Also, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. During his years of service he was attached to the USS Radford (DDE-446), USS Repose (AH-16), U.S.M.C. (FMF-PAC), Naval construction battalion, and Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego and Long Beach, CA.
After service he worked at Reef Baker Inc. in Marine City and Huntsman Plastics in the security office. He enjoyed his time spent with his family. He also enjoyed family BBQ's and holiday get togethers.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Eloise and his daughter Karen Khatab.
He is survived by five of his six children; Ann (Ali) Seven, Linda Smith, Gary (Sharon) Smith II, Tammy Endicott, Patrick (Erin) Smith. 13 grandchildren; Tanya, Kenny, Tom, Julie, Timmy, Laura, Sam, Ashley, Michael, Ryan, Amanda, Sarah, and Sebastian. He is also survived numerous great-grandchildren and sisters; Cheryl Wubker and Nancy Nichols.
Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday April 11 at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. Visiting hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. Military honors will be held under the auspices of the U.S. Navy and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans. In memory of Gary the family requests that the donations be made to the wishes of the family. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery with his wife Eloise.
