Denise Gremillion Bankovic

A Mass of Christian Burial for Denise Gremillion Bankovic will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday March 1, 2014 in St. Francis Xavier Cathedral with Reverend Bruce Miller officiating. Interment will be in Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer & Son.

Denise G. Bankovic, 55, of Woodworth, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in Rapides Regional Medical Center after a long illness with cancer.

Mrs. Bankovic graduated with a B.S. in Education from Louisiana College and a M.Ed. from Northwestern State University. Her dedication to educating special needs children was a major focus in her lifetime. She began her career working with mentally ill children at Central State Hospital and continued by working with substance abuse students at Rapides Chemical Dependency Unit and worked as a Rapides Parish School Board Special Education Teacher at Forest Hill Elementary until her death. Her passion for helping the less fortunate continued throughout her lifetime. Being the first Executive Director for The Food Bank of Central Louisiana she was instrumental in getting the Adopt a Cenla Senior Food Program started. Mrs. Bankovic also worked as the Executive Director of Working People's Free Pharmacy so the "working poor" could obtain medication in Rapides and Avoyelles parishes. Her love of the outdoors and animals helped her become an avid supporter and volunteer for the Alexandria Zoo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank B. Gremillion and Elise E. Gremillion; her brother, Robert Bruce Gremillion and sister-in-law Ann Marie Hussey Phillips.

Denise G. Bankovic is survived by her husband, Michael Anthony Bankovic and one son, Christopher Michael Bankovic, his wife, Kristy Freeman Bankovic and three grandchildren, Christian A. Bankovic, Daniel R. Bankovic and Riley C. Bankovic of Hammond, Louisiana. She is also survived by her brother, Michael Gremillion and his wife, Phyllis, of Covington, and her sister, Lisa Little and her husband Dennis of Woodworth, sister-in-Law Eleanor Gremillion Casteix and her husband, John, of Ventress, LA, mother-in-law, Genevieve Swido of Alexandria, LA, brother-in-law, John E. Bankovic and his wife, Donna; six nieces, Amanda "Mandy" G. Nesom, Emily Gremillion, Kristy Marien Bell, Katie Marien, Stacie Bankovic, Sarah Lachney; eight nephews, Robert B. Gremillion, Jr., Jeff Gremillion, Gant Gremillion, Evan Gremillion, Jamie Marien, John E. Bankovic, Thomas Bankovic and Jason Little; great nieces and nephews, Faith E. Gremillion, Sidney Nesom, Danielle Mistric Hollier, Michelle and Madelyn Gremillion, Olivia and Anderson Gremillion, David Gremillion, Avery and Annika Pennigton, Maggie and Mason Bell, Tristan and Jay Bankovic, Seth Bankovic, Maddox, Parker and McKenzie Little; great great nephew and niece Aubrey and Reed Hollier.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 and again Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. till 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home.

A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2014 in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be John E. Bankovic, Sr., John E. Bankovic, Jr., Thomas P. Bankovic, Robert Bruce Gremillion, Jr., Jamie Marien, Sidney Nesom and Gordon C. Gremillion, Jr. Honorary pallbearer is Reid Foster.
