Donald Reece Jones passed away on 2 May, after battling several long illnesses, he was 80 years old. Born in Chicago to William and Eleanor Jones, Don spent his early years in that city. Around age 8, he moved with his family to the Three Rivers, Michigan area. Completing his primary education, Don began studies at the University of Michigan. He completed a double major in 1957, receiving Bachelor degrees in Science and Forestry. Following graduation, Don served two years in the US Army as a radioman. Don married Leah Livingston in 1962 after meeting in an icy parking lot at their place of employment. The new couple struck out for California and began a family in Arcata, where Don worked for the city, planning parks. Arcata City square and Redwood Park are some of his notable projects. Don and Leah added four more children and seven moves before settling in Eureka in 1969. Exercising an artistic interest, Don began work in leather crafts; traveling to local fairs and festivals selling belts, wallets, purses and like items. To enhance the artistry of his leather work, he studied painting, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. Music was another artistic avenue he traveled, playing trumpet in the Eureka Salvation Army Band for over 30 years. During his career, Don was employed at Coast Oyster Company, The Salvation Army, The Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service. After retirement, he spent his days fishing, rebuilding fishing tackle, and tying fishing flies. He became well known at local thrift and antique shops looking for fishing gear to repair. His wife, father & mother preceded him in death. He is survived by: his brother Richard of Battle Creek, MI, and sister Carol of Hermitage, TN; his children: Jennifer Hood & Suzanne Jones of Eureka; Peter of Anchorage, AK; Steven of Union, WA; Kristina Jones of San Leandro; eight grand children and 11 great grandchildren.
