Halvor J. Braafladt, MD Halvor John Braafladt passed away on April 3, 2014 with family by his side. He was 87. Hal was born on June 4, 1926 in Tsinan, China to medical missionary parents Louis and Hope. He grew up in Sacramento, California with his older sister, two older brothers, and his three younger brothers. Halvor graduated from Grant Union High School in 1944. He was an Eagle Scout and a First Lieutenant in the high school Cadet Corp. He joined the
in 1944 as an Electrician's Mate Third Class serving in the Philippines on the USS Oglala. He attended Pacific Lutheran College, Stanford University, graduating with a BA in Biological Science in 1950, and Northwestern Medical School in Chicago, graduating with an MD degree in 1954. He moved to Eureka in 1957, and began a distinguished career in the medical profession as a general practice physician and surgeon. His community service and professional accomplishments were many. He was a delegate for ten years in the California Medical Association, which included chairmanship of the district. He was a former president of the Humboldt-Del Norte Medical Society, Chief of Staff of General Hospital, Vice Chief of Staff of St. Joseph Hospital and District Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America. He organized and headed the Richard Anderson Rhododendron Club and headed annual Rhodie shows for many years. He was actively involved with the Union Labor Health Foundation's Angel Fund, which provides healthcare needs for children and adults of Humboldt County. Hal's varied interests, spanning over 50 years, included wood working, photography, hunting and fishing, wine making, rare Rhododendron propagation, breeding and showing Morgan show horses, and cooking. Hal, and his wife Denise, shared a unique relationship, both accepting of and being accepted by each other's families. Children and step-children: Paula Sauvageau of Portland, OR, Arnie Braafladt (Anna) of Morgan Hill, CA, Nancy Lowery of Carson City, NV, Patti Cooley of Sacramento, CA, Robin Van Atta of Arcata, CA, Donna Smith (Wayne Caldwell) of McKinleyville CA, Bob Johnson (Susan) of Arcata, CA, Janine Susich (Mark) of Redding, CA, Geri Bullard (Alan) of Nampa, ID, Jackie Moore (Fred) of Eureka, CA. Brother: Paul Braafladt (Esther) of Seattle, WA. Sisters-in-law: Jeane Braafladt and Jeanette Braafladt of Sacramento, CA. Grandchildren: Nicole, Sarah, Geoffrey, Joel, Vincent, Osha, Iris, Jake, Jobe, Patrick, Aaron, Danica, Collin, Madelon, and Natalie. Great-grandchildren: Cedar, Dahlia and Kennedy. Hal is survived by many nieces and nephews. Hal was preceded in death by his first wife Arlene, second wife Patricia, stepson Jerry Felt, brothers Phil, Walter, Chet and Jimmy, and sister Borghild Ogaard. Hal and Denise had a core group of friends that were a constant source of support and entertainment. Thank you Carl, Lisa, Julie, Max, and Carolyn, and to Mike for making Hal's last vintages possible, and to our wonderful neighbors, Gene and Jan Stiles. Gene always had time for his "good neighbor Hal" with conversation and ice cream bars. A special thank you to Dollie Frey and her wonderful staff, and to Veterans Affairs. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 3rd at the Christ Episcopal Church, at 15th and H streets in Eureka, CA, of which Hal was a member and where, because of his love of music, he sang in the choir. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Halvor J. Braafladt Memorial Fund through Humboldt Area Foundation, 373 Indianola Road, Bayside, CA 95524.
