BARRE CITY - The service of remembrance and celebration of the life of Donald Ober Collins, of Abbott Avenue, was held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the Barre Congregational Church. He died Sept. 15, 2013, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.The Reverend David Vanderline-Abernathy, pastor of the church, led the service and was assisted by Don's granddaughter, the Reverend Elissa C. Johnk, pastor of the Old Meeting House Church in East Montpelier Center, who offered words of remembrance and reflections.
The Guest Book is expired.
Organist Eric Giles led the congregation in the hymns, "From All That Dwell Below the Skies," "Shall We Gather at the River," "Be Thou My Vision," "Abide With Me," and "For All The Saints." He also directed the Chancel Choir in the anthem, "I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry," as a tribute to Don's longtime Chancel Choir membership.
Soloist/pianist Roger Grow sang the song, "Sunrise, Sunset," from the play, "Fiddler on the Roof," which Don loved.
A delegation attended from the Barre Rotary Club and the "Rotabarians," both of which he was a longtime member.
A private graveside service and family memorial flower presentation preceded the service at the Berlin Corner Cemetery for Don, his wife, Alice, and sister, Eleanor Brock. Donald's flag was presented to his eldest daughter, Judith Collins Jones, by longtime friend Bruce W. Judd.
Fellowship and luncheon followed in the church dining room under the direction of Rosemary Wheelock and her staff.
The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, was in charge of the arrangements.
