GROTON - Robert William Herdman, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at his home in Groton, following an extended illness.

He was born in Mamaroneck, N.Y., on Feb. 8, 1924, the only child of William Parker and Anna (Soleum) Herdman.
He graduated from Mamaroneck (N.Y.) High School and served in the U.S. Army.
He graduated from Middlebury College with a bachelor's degree in 1950.
Bob was an educator and director of admissions at New York University and Bard College, and later served as an educator at Middlebury College. He also worked for the state of Vermont in the employment division for 15 years, prior to his retirement.
He was a collector of antiques and antique clocks, a voracious reader of The New York Times, the Burlington Free Press and The Boston Globe.
Bob enjoyed traveling, particularly overseas to England and Norway. Bob had lived in Groton for 43 years.
Bob had a pen pal from New Zealand, Bruce Sinclair, with whom he began corresponding while serving in the Army. It was a relationship that continued through the years.
Survivors include his partner of 43 years, Richard Brooks, of Groton, Vt.; three cousins, Susan Herdman, of Arizona, Judith (Herdman) Kelty, of Georgia, and Priscilla Herdman, of New York.
In keeping with Bob's wishes, there will be a service at Bob and Richard's home, on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Candace Ricker officiating. Burial, at a later date, will be in the Corinth Center Cemetery.
