Joanne "Jody" Elgin Obituary
Between every capital letter and the end of every sentence you will find a lifetime of stories and memories. Joanne (Jody) Carolyn Elgin passed away July 27, 2014 at Longmont United Hospital in Longmont, Colorado at the age of 87. Born April 17, 1927 in Kahoka, Missouri, the daughter of J. Otis Brown, a lawyer, and Geneva Anderson Brown, a teacher. She had one older brother J. Richard known to her as Dick. She grew up in Albia, Iowa. Her mother married Henry D. Dukes in 1943. They moved to Centerville, Iowa, and she graduated from Centerville High School in 1944. Jody graduated in the first Bachelor of Science in Nursing class at the University of Iowa in 1949 and remained an avid Hawkeyes fan throughout her life. She was a member of Gamma Phi sorority. One morning, she saw a young man walking to class and asked who he was. Learning he was Jack Elgin from Centerville, Jody said "I'm going to marry him." Beautiful, redheaded, Jody Brown did marry handsome, Jack Elgin in Centerville, Iowa on June 13, 1949. They were married 56 wonderful years, making their home in Centerville, raising their 3 children and spending many good times with lifelong friends spanning generations. Jody was a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Centerville, Iowa. In 1975, she became the Director of Nursing, the first non-religious Director of Nursing in Mercy history. She continued in that role until retirement in 1992. Social, educational, and philanthropic organizations include; PEO chapter KA, (one of 5 generations of PEO), T.T.T., MXL and Outlook. She loved playing cards at the Centerville Country Club with dear friends. She also enjoyed playing bridge at the Longmont Sr. Center with new friends. Jody was preceded in death by her husband, John B. (Jack) Elgin, and son, Mike (Lora) Elgin. She is survived by her brother J.R. Brown (Col. Retired) and his wife, Alice, of Springfield, Missouri. Daughter, Jackie Elgin (Dan) Nagell of Longmont, Colorado. Their children Nita (Chris) Baumann, and Aaron (Stephanie) Nagell, Mike's son, Dallas (Katie) Elgin, son, John (Linda) Elgin of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, children; Jessica Elgin, Josh (Rebecca) Elgin, John David Elgin, Maria Hoffman and Karyn (Mike) McNulty. Jody and Jack had 13 Great- Grandchildren and one Great-Great- Grandchild. She is also survived by sisters- in- law Jane Elgin (Bob) and Rita Elgin (Dick) many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Graveside Services will be held at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville, Iowa, Saturday August 30, 2014 at 2:00p.m. with a reception following at the Continental Hotel. Jody's goodness, her caring, and her wisdom will live on as a legacy of love that will always be with us. In memorium... when you see a beautiful redhead, an elderly couple, when you touch the hand of a patient, tell a good joke, or have a scotch and water at 5 p.m., smile and think of Jody Brown Elgin.
