Rex Carnes Obituary
Rex Albert Carnes of Longmont died November 9, 2012 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 87 years old. Rex was born on December 5, 1924 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Fred and Mary (Ellies) Carnes. He grew up in Minneapolis. He served 21 years in the US Air Force. During WWII he was involved in 21 missions as a tail gunner in the B-17 Flying Fortress, as a member of the 416th Bombardment Squadron, and the 99th Bombardment Group of the 15th Air Force in Italy. He received numerous decorations, including Air Medal with 3 Clusters and 2 Air Force Commendation Medals. He served as a Sergeant/Major at 3rd Air Force in England and base Sergeant/Major in Vietnam. He retired from the USAF in January 1965. During his military career, he completed a college degree through the University of Maryland Courses. Rex spent 22 years in the Insurance and Investments business with Lutheran Brotherhood, currently Thrivent Insurance, where he was honored as a Chartered Life Underwriter, Fraternal Insurance Counselor and other professional degrees. Rex following retirement maintained an active and involved life, volunteering in numerous activities and causes. He was involved with many senior organizations on a local, county and state level, primarily with AARP State Legislative Committee. He had serviced as President of the National Fraternal Congress, State Fraternal Section. He also served as Director of the 99th Bombardment Group Historical Society and Commander, Chapter 16, Disabled American Veterans, Longmont for 7 years. He was active with the American Legion, Post #32, Longmont and Faith Community Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his wives, Florence (Neuleib) Carnes in 2003 and Wilma (Booth) Carnes. Surviving are his son Mark (Sally) Carnes of Windsor; daughter Rexanne (Charles) Tucker of Arivaca, Arizona; five grandchildren; Aaron (Danielle) Carnes and Joshua Carnes of Ft. Collins; Mathew Carnes of Loveland; Sarah (Jamie) Miller of Great Falls, Montana; and Thoreau (Moon) Smiley of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and six great grandchildren Ethan, Taylor, Noah and Evelynn Carnes and Rayne and Jude Smiley. A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Crematory. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Faith Community Lutheran Church.
