Warren Gibson Obituary
Warren Dana Gibson of Longmont died March 4, 2013 at the Peaks Care Center. He was 97. He was born November 10, 1915 in Peoria, Illinois to Harry V. Gibson and Elvira Lindgren Gibson. An only child at the time, his mother died when he was 11 years old which undoubtedly contributed to his inner strength of character and ability to persevere through numerous challenges in his life. As a child, Warren was an imaginative and talented artist, excelling in drawing and painting. He won numerous awards in high school and was offered an art scholarship for college. He worked for a number of years following his high school graduation before enlisting in the United States Army in 1943. He served his country during WWII, landing on Utah Beach during the D-Day Normandy invasion and received numerous awards and medals for his service. He met his future wife, Marian E. Birkett, on a blind date on July 16, 1946 and they were married exactly three years later on July 16, 1949. Together they shared 63 years of marriage and had three children; Gloria, Dana and Tina. Warren worked for Pitney Bowes in sales and sales management for 30 years and was successful in his career; not only because of his sales talent, but due to his genuine respect for his clients and overall enjoyment of his personal interaction with people. While his career was important, he never lost his desire for or talent in artistry. After his retirement at age 65, he took college classes in art and pursued his passion in drawing and painting, creating a number of works now displayed in the homes of his children. In addition to art, he had a great passion for golf. He played almost daily for a number of years after retirement. He was also an excellent dancer and bridge player. He and his wife traveled extensively for a number of years after their retirement and thoroughly enjoyed their freedom to do so. Declining health forced Marian and Warren to relocate in 2007 from Springfield, Illinois to Longmont, Colorado to be near their daughter. He was a member of Longs Peak United Methodist Church. Warren was loved dearly throughout his life by his family and friends, and most recently by the caregivers at the Peaks Care Center where he resided until his death. Warren was a good husband, wonderful father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune of knowing this gentle man. He is survived by his daughter Tina Gibson and grandchildren Tyler and McKenzie Gibson of Longmont, CO and his son Dana (Kristen) Gibson of Duluth, GA and their children, Ryan and Jordan. He is further survived by two brothers, Jack Gibson of Goshen, IN, Richard Gibson of Philadelphia, PA and his sister Judy Horrigan of Chicago, IL. Warren was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marian only 7 months ago, and his daughter Gloria in 1969. Cremation has been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Robbie James officiating. Contributions in Warren's memory may be made to the Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peaks Ave. Longmont, CO. 80501 Share your condolences with the family at www.howemortuary.com
