J. L. Culver

Mr. James Luther (J.L.) Culver of Florence, Alabama died July 17, 2014 at the age of 88. J.L. was born in Waterloo, Alabama and served faithfully in the United States Army, 90th Infantry Division in World War II, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg. He attended both the University of Alabama and Florence State Teachers College after the war.

He had a successful career in the shotcrete business for over 50 years, at National Pool Company, Pressure Concrete Company and General Gunite Company. Throughout his life he always had a smile, was ever optimistic and never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife of over 67 years, Erline Wilson Culver; and his daughter Janet Culver Cherry, both of Florence, Alabama; grandson Mr. Christian Bradley Cherry and wife Dr. Megan Seibert Cherry of Birmingham, Alabama; grandson Dr. David Michael Cherry and wife Cary Sawyer Cherry; and great-grandchildren Caroline Camille Cherry and Margaret Culver Cherry of Birmingham, Alabama.

Pallbearers include his grandsons; lifelong friends originally from Waterloo, Mr. Karl Potts and Mr. Billy Mangum both of Florence, Alabama; Mr. John Seibert of Mobile, Alabama; and Dr. Terry Sawyer of Nashville, Tennessee.

The funeral will be officiated by his nephew, the Reverend Dallas Culver, and will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Elkins Funeral Home in Florence, Alabama, with a visitation immediately preceding the funeral at 10 a.m. Following the burial, beginning at 2:30 p.m., the family will host friends at the Edith Newman Culver Museum in Waterloo, Alabama.

The family wishes to thank Hospice Advantage and Eldercare for the wonderful care given Mr. Culver.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the First United Methodist Church of Florence, Alabama.
