Wilford C. Doss Jr.

Dr. Wilford C. Doss Jr., 92, of Florence, died Friday, March 14, 2014, at ECM Hospital. Private services were held at Greenview Memorial Park.

Dr. Doss was born June 1, 1921, in Houston, Miss. to Cleve and Elizabeth Doss. He graduated from Millsaps College and then attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business. In 1941, he married Mary McRae, of Jackson, Miss., and then served in the U.S. navy during World War II in the South Pacific theatre of operations. Following the war, Wilford attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine on the G.I. Bill then the Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis. Following medical school, his internship was served at the St. Louis Children's Hospital and residency was served at the University of Tennessee Children's Hospital. Dr. Doss then came to Florence where he established the Infants and Children's Clinic. At the age of 58, Dr. Doss then returned to medical school in order to become a dermatologist and worked until the age of 85 before retiring. Dr. Doss also served as chief of staff at ECM Hospital during his career. He was a longtime active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Florence where he was an elder. At the church, he loved to greet newcomers and get to know them. Dr. Doss was also a long time Rotarian.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Mary McRae Doss; his grandson, Holland Garrett; and his brother, Edward Marvin Doss. Survivors are his wife, Sara Elizabeth Doss, whom he married in 2004; children, Dudley Edward Doss and wife, Dana Braswell Doss, Sequim, Wash., and Adrienne Elizabeth Ford, Atlanta, Ga.; stepchildren, Penney Booream Griffin (Tommy), Florence, Cynthia Booream Briand, Florence, Christy Booream McCorkle (Brad), Athens, Ala., and Howard Christian "Chris" Booream Jr., Florence; sister, Jimmie Smith, Monroe, La.; grandson, Robert Lyndle Garrett (Jill), Birmingham; and greatgrandchildren, Tatum Garrett and William Doss Garrett.
