Harry P. Britton, reporter, editor and retired U. S. Information Agency Officer, died April 27. He was 87.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, he came to Vallejo in 1944 and entered the U.S. Army in Nov. of that year. After training, he joined the Seventh Infantry Division on Okinawa, serving with the occupation forces in Korea until 1946.

A graduate of Vallejo Junior and San Jose State Colleges, he was a Reporter and Editor of the Hollister Evening Free Lance before joining the Information Agency in 1945. He subsequently served in Pakistan, Ethiopia and Korea before Chinese language training in Washington and Taiwan. He then became Press Officer and Information officer in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He later served in Washington before becoming USIS Deputy Director in Taipei. Five years later, he was selected for in-service training at UC Berkeley in 1968-69, a year of turmoil on the campus. After a stint as East Asia Policy Officer in Washington, he became Public Affairs Officer in Hong Kong. He wound up his 28 year career back in Taipei as head of the cultural and information section.

Following retirement in 1983, Mr. Britton and family returned to make their home in Vallejo. He was active in support of his children's school activities, and continued his interest in diving, swimming and photography.

He was a former member of The Elks Lodge 559, Vallejo, the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents Club and the Malaysian Press Club. In addition, he was the first president of the San Benito County Little League.

Britton is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Robert and Patrick; daughter, Maureen; sister, Erma Britton in Canada; daughter-in-law, Lacey, and granddaughter, Kennedy; all of whom will miss him dearly.

At his request no services were held. Cremation will be followed by burial at sea.
