Joseph R. Mangan Sr., 71, of Hanover Township, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, in Hospice Community Care at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.

He was born in Plymouth on Oct. 28, 1941, a son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Bond Mangan. Joseph attended Hanover High School and he was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years at Certainteed Corp. in Mountain Top, where he served as shop steward for the United Auto Workers Local 365. Joseph was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish in Wilkes-Barre and he was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post 59, Hanover Township, where he served as the past commander from 1984-1985. He also was a former member of American Legion Post 609 and VFW Post 5267 in Hanover Township.

He was preceded in death by his infant brother and sister, Edward and Mary Jane Mangan, and by his sisters, Barbara Demorat, in 2001, and Delores McNeill, in 2010.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy J. Bogdan Mangan, with whom he celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary on Nov. 9, 2012; children, Edward Mangan, Chicago, Ill.; Joseph R. Mangan Jr., Hanover Township; Denise Mangan, Kingston; Mary Shuella and her husband, Joseph, Larksville; grandchildren, Alessia and Audrianna Mangan, Bria and Landon Shuella; brother, Harry Mangan and his wife, Sylvia, Hanover Township; sister, Judy Chado and her husband, Robert, Nanticoke; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
