A. Roscoe Miller
100, of Walnut Creek died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Walnut Hills Nursing Home at Walnut Creek. He was born Feb. 10, 1913 in Holmes County to the late Malva J. and Malinda (Mast) Miller. Roscoe grew up on Cherry Ridge, attending Cherry Ridge School and Walnut Creek High School. He attended Goshen College in Indiana and completed his degree at Ashland College in Ohio and did post-graduate work at Ohio State University. Roscoe spent 40 years in the field of education. His teaching career began in the one room schools of Weaver's and Gerber Valley. In 1955 he became the eighth grade teacher at Walnut Creek Elementary School. In 1958 he became the principal there and continued in that position until his retirement in 1977. On May 20, 1945 he married Mattie Gerber. They have resided in Gerber Valley for almost 68 years. Roscoe was an active member of the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church. He taught adult Sunday School classes for most of his adult life and sang in the Walnut Creek Men's Quartet for 30 years. Roscoe loved history and established the archives for the church. He also helped to publish the sesquicentennial history for the church. In 1977 Roscoe edited the Sesquicentennial history for the town of Walnut Creek. He was well known in the area as a local historian and an expert in the genealogy of local families. During his retirement he spent many hours volunteering for The German Culture Museum, The Mennonite Information Center and Save and Serve. Roscoe and Mattie also served in Voluntary Service in Phoenix, Ariz. in 1978 and 1979.
He is survived by his wife the former, Mattie Gerber; two sons, Max (Paula) Miller of Sugarcreek, Charles Miller of Missoula, Mont. and daughter, Elinor (Ted) Shattuck of Grafton, N.H.; grandchildren, Mark Miller of Dundee and Lisa (Jesse) Miller of Sugarcreek. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Paul R., John H., Faye (Troyer), Mary (Miller), Lester, Esther (Hershberger) and Payson.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church with Pastors Don Hamsher and Dan Owolabi officiating. Private family burial will be held in the Church Cemetery prior to services at the church. Friends may call on Sunday 2-5 p.m. at the Walnut Creek Mennonite Church. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home at Sugarcreek. Memorials may be made to Walnut Creek Mennonite Church, PO Box 182, Walnut Creek, OH 44687.
