Bernard Booth Obituary

Bernard E.
(Bernie) Booth
80, of 5613 East State Road, Newcomerstown, Ohio
passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Riverside Manor Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center in Newcomerstown with his family at his side following a period of declining health. Bernie was born on Feb. 15, 1933, the only child of the late Forest (Taylor) Booth and Earl M. Booth at Tallmadge, Ohio. The family moved to Newcomerstown area when Bernie was two years old and he grew up on their family farm near Guernsey. He graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1951, and worked as a brick and stone mason (the trade he learned as a teenager from his father) until inducted into United States Army in 1953. Bernie served as a Military Police officer in the Panama Canal Zone, during the Korean Conflict and left the service in March of 1955. On June 26, 1955 he married his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, the former Linda Von Smith. The young entrepreneur and his wife worked side by side in various business endeavors including Booth Construction Company, Heritage Hill Apartments, Echo Pointe Hardwoods, American Heritage Furniture and Oak Pointe Stair Systems Inc. Together they laid out and started Booth Acres allotment east of Newcomerstown, where they built their home and raised their children. Bernie loved the challenges and satisfaction of seeing a project to completion. In 1978, he and his partner purchased the L.J. Smith Stair Inc. located in Bowerston. They were successful in turning the company into a major manufacturer in the industry of hardwood stair parts and custom stairways. Bernie served as president and CEO of the company. He sold his share of the business in 1986. Among his many hobbies, were collecting Indian artifacts, restoring antique cars, gun collecting, and working in his wood shop. He took a great interest in watching his children and grandchildren in all their school events and sports. He was also instrumental in the construction of the Trojan victory bell, which his family has maintained. Bernie was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, a former member of B.P.O.E. #1555, Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Gun Collectors Association, and Newcomerstown Community Improvement Corporation.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Linda; a son, Dr. David M. Booth (wife, Lisa); a daughter, Brenda B. Casteel (husband, Rick), all of Newcomerstown; beloved grandchildren, Lindsay (Dr. Richard Limperos) of Medina, Kristen (Cory) Meeks of Newcomerstown, and Derek Booth of Columbus; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Duane and Alice Smith; and two nephews and several cousins. He taught his family and his employees the value of hard work, humility, and the passion to achieve their goals. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all nursing staff and employees of Riverside Manor for their loving care and concern during the time Bernie made his home with them.
Services will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Addy Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Eggan officiating. Entombment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery with the Newcomerstown Honor Guard conducting military graveside services. Visitation will be on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 1-5 p.m at Addy Funeral Home. Bernie was one of the finest men I have ever met. I worked for him and Butch at L.J. Smith. He was much more a father to his employees than a boss. He would listen to your questions or concerns as if nothing else mattered and he had all the time in the world. I have never seen anyone lay block faster - three guys mixing mud and they couldn't keep up with him. I am blessed to have known him. He will be sadly missed.
