Darrell Lee
gentleman, husband, father and grandfather, age 81, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia, following a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 7, 1933 at Uhrichsville, Ohio, Darrell was the son of the late Paul "Lefty" and Sarah (Lahm) Pancher. In 1951, Darrell graduated from Uhrichsville High School. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Military Police from February 24, 1953 until February 19, 1955, and in the Army Reserves from 1976 to 1986. His family and friends loved hearing Darrell's tales from those army years, especially his stories about the children he met and loved in Honduras. Darrell started his career at Universal Sewer Pipe. He then was employed by the United States Postal Service for 34 years, until his retirement in 1989. He was known on his rural route as the "Pony Express". He was also a bailiff for the Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court from 1990 to 1998, working with the Honorable Judge Roger G. Lile. He also served his county as commissioner from 1999 to 2002. Darrell was generous, outgoing, civic-minded and tireless. He was a former member of the Twin City Hospital Board of Directors, the Tuscarawas Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Lodge, the Lions Club and past exalted ruler of the Elks #424. As a life-long member of the Elks, he also served as the chairman and announcer of the Elks Annual Benefit Horse Show for 37 years and the Old Timers Day. Darrell was a member of the First Christian Church in Uhrichsville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing with his friends Joe Tripodi and Bill McGuire, horseback riding, square dancing, and coaching baseball. He enjoyed attending the Rt. 250 Auction and bringing home treasures, much to the chagrin of his family.
On Nov. 20, 1955, Darrell married the former Donna Long in the Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas. She survives, along with their daughter Shawnee (Ron) Dunlap of Freeport and their son Todd (Brenda) Pancher of Tuscarawas; his sister Mandy Walters of Uhrichsville; his six grandchildren Mindy Sue (Scott) Parsons, Jerrod LeMasters, Cody Pancher, Cole Pancher, Rich (Jodee) Dunlap and Kyle (fiancé Shelley Becker) Dunlap; seven great grandchildren Allysa, Brodey, Breydan, Brynnlee, Alivia, Madison and MacKinzee. Of all the things in life that Darrell loved, he loved his family the most. In addition to his parents, Darrell is preceded in death by two brothers Jack and Dick Pancher. The memory of Darrell's quick smile, hearty laugh and kind heart will remain forever with his family and friends.
