LaVerne F. Youngen
94, of New Philadlephia, died Saturday, August 16, 2014 in the Community Hospice House. Born Oct. 11, 1919 in Bolivar he was a son of the late Fred and Bertha Schilling Youngen. LaVerne was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Youngen on Oct. 31, 1996; brothers, Wilbur and Earl Youngen; sisters, Irene Funk and Ila Youngen and grandson, Josiah Youngen.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in W.W. II and fought on Normandy Beach during the D-Day invasion. He was employed at Firestone Tire in Akron as an Inspector and retired after 33 years of service. LaVerne was a member of the First Baptist Church in New Philadelphia, loved gardening and was known for his ability to fix just about anything, especially bicycles.
LaVerne will be sadly missed by his children, Claudia (Jess) Males of Kentucky, Lois (Dan) Millard of New Philadelphia and Fred (Janna) Youngen of Indiana; grandchildren, Claudette and Jesse Males, Danny Millard, Elisabeth Ramos, Joshua and Maria Youngen; and great-grandchildren, Leonel, Ashley and Kevin Ramos.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 18, (today) at 1:30 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at 246 E High Ave., New Philadelphia with his son, Rev. Fred Youngen officiating. Interment will be in the Union Hill Cemetery at Sugarcreek where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends can call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday.
