age 82, of Dennison, Ohio, died peacefully, with his family by his bedside, on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Aultman Hospital in Canton. Born on May 11, 1930 in Uhrichsville, Melvin was the son of the late Melvin W. and Pearl M. (Shockley) Vanfossen. From 1951 to 1953, Melvin served his country in the U.S. Army, Korean Conflict. He was employed at the Timken Co. in Canton as a heater operator until his retirement after 32 years. He founded Vanfossen Cemetery Lettering and retired a second time from there in 1996. Melvin was a life member of the Mystic Tie Lodge #194, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Canton 32degree, and B.P.O.E. #424. He was Elk of the Year in 1993. He was a member of the VFW Post #7943 in Tuscarawas, the United Steelworkers of America AFL-CIO and the Uhrichsville First Christian Church. Melvin enjoyed family gatherings, spending time with his grandchildren, jigsaw puzzles, NASCAR racing and taking trips. He also enjoyed making caramels and cookies at Christmas to give to his family and friends. Melvin was a hard worker. He had a kind heart and never met a stranger. Although his own father died four months before he was born, Melvin was a wonderful role model for his own children and grandchildren.
On Aug. 22, 1954, Melvin married Shirley J. (Brown) Vanfossen, who survives of the home. He and Shirley shared 58 years of true unwavering love. Also surviving are their children, Melinda (Mark) Willard of Tappan Lake, Joseph (Linda) Vanfossen of Dennison, Janet (Michael) McConnell of New Philadelphia and Wesley Vanfossen of Kimbolton; grandchildren, Joseph (Julie) Vanfossen Jr. of Dover, Dr. Steven (Melinda) Willard of Canton, Beth (Noah) Mechling of Millersburg, David Willard of Tappan Lake, Cheyenne, Wesley, Celeste, Cash and Ariana Vanfossen of West Lafayette; great-grandchildren, Peyton and Ryder Vanfossen and soon to be arriving Hudson Willard; his siblings, Robert (Paula) Smitley of New Philadelphia, Linda (Randy) Metzger of Bolivar and Harriet (Marvin) Fete of New Philadelphia; and brother-in-law, John W. Brown, Jr. of Dennison. In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by his siblings, Mildred M. Czatt, D. Jacob Smitley; two infant siblings; and two grandchildren, Stephanie Willard and John Ross McConnell.
Funeral services for Melvin will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville with the Rev. Mark Unrue officiating. Burial will follow at the Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville. Calling hours will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the funeral home. The Uhrichsville B.P.O.E. Elks #424 will conduct memorial services at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Twin City Christian Service Center, 109 N.
