Dr. Steven R. Close
62, of Millersburg, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, with his family by his side. Steven was born to Wayne and the late Dorothy (Uher) Close on June 1, 1951, in Millersburg, Ohio. Steven graduated from West Holmes High School in 1969, received a bachelor's degree of Science and agriculture in 1973 and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University in 1977 and was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He married Linda (Morris) in June of 1974 and she survives. Steven was an energetic and active participant within the local community. Steven opened a veterinary practice in Berlin in 1978. In 1982 Steven and his wife, Linda took over the family dairy farm and raised one of the top state ranked Jersey herd in Ohio. Also in 1982 Steven became a Veterinary Supervisor for the Ohio Department of Agriculture Division of Meat Inspection. Steven later retired as the Assistant Chief for the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Meat Inspection. Steven was an active member of St. John's Church of Millersburg, where he served as an Elder and Deacon. Steven served as an advisor for the Skillful Squeezers 4-H Club and as a board member for the Holmes County 4-H Committee. Steven served as the Holmes County Fair Veterinarian and on the FSA Committee for 18 years. Steven served many roles on the West Holmes School Board for over 12 years and coached many years of Holmes County Park District youth sports. Steven was currently on the board of directors for the Sheraton Amelia Resort in Orlando, FL and a current member of the Ohio State University Extension Advisory Committee at the time of his passing. Steven enjoyed watching all Ohio State athletic events, golfing, farming, and vacationing across the country with his family.
Steven is survived by his wife, Linda; his two children, Stephanie (Ryan) Cottrill of Blacklick, Ohio and Craig Close of Shreve, Ohio; three grandchildren, Cade Close age 7, Sydney Cottrill age 6, and Addison Cottrill age 3; his father, Wayne (Janice) Close of Millersburg, Ohio; his sister, Cindy (Charles) Krupp of Peoria, Ariz.; his nephew, Charlie Krupp; and niece, Dorothy Krupp. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Church of Millersburg with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Walther officiating. Burial will be at the Killbuck Cemetery, Killbuck, Ohio. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to an organization that is close to Steve's daughters heart, that researches Brain and Lymphoma cancer.
