93, of Berlin, Ohio passed away July 26, 2014 after a brief hospital stay. He was born April 2, 1921 in Berlin, Ohio. He was the fourth of eleven children born to the late Sevilla and Alvin Miller. Wayne graduated from Berlin High School in 1939 and Goshen College in 1943, where he enjoyed his studies and also excelled in baseball and basketball. In 1944, he married Dorothy E. Kauffmann. The couple moved to California, where Wayne fought forest fires as a member of Civilian Public Service. Wayne and Dorothy then moved to Michigan, where Wayne served as a teacher, counselor, and administrator from 1946 to 1981. He received a PhD from the University of Michigan in 1969. Following retirement, Wayne and Dorothy returned to Berlin, Ohio to be close to family during their retirement years. Wayne planted and maintained a small orchard during that time. He also played his accordion with The Retreads, a musical group that entertained residents in retirement communities. He was inducted into the Holmes County Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 for his high school sports contributions. Wayne was a devoted, loving father and husband.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Myrna (Grumbein) Miller; a grandson, Mark Isaac Grumbein; and two brothers, Vernon Miller and Galen. He is survived a son, Maurice (Deborah) Miller of Decatur, Ga; two daughters, Marlene Miller of Berlin and Marilyn (Vern) Rempel of Littleton, Colo; five grandchildren, Hannah Miller, Sarah Nathaniel, Matthew Grumbein, Jess Rempel and Diana Remple; two great- grandchildren, Mikayla and Nickolas Nathaniel; one brother, Paul Miller and five sisters, Ruth Mullet, Olis Miller, Myrtle Fricke, Gladys Mumper and Lorene Wenger.
Celebration of his Life will be Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 4 p.m. at the Berlin Mennonite Church following a burial with the immediate family. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home at Sugarcreek. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to LifeCare Hospice, the staffs of Pomerene Hospital and Walnut Hills Retirement Community and the Berlin Mennonite Church for all their kindness and Support.
