William Edward "Spike" Tharp
age 81, of Tippecanoe, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia, following a brief illness. Born in Uhrichsville, on April 4, 1933, Spike was the son of the late John W. and Olive A. (Wires) Tharp. Upon graduating from Tuscarawas- Warwick High School in 1951, where he excelled in all sports, Spike served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended the Rush Community Church of the Nazarene. In 1998, Spike retired from Buckeye JVS where he was a diesel truck instructor. Spike was a Harrison County Democratic Committee Representative for Washington Township, a member of the Freeport Masonic Lodge #415 and the Tuscarawas VFW Post # 7943. Spike enjoyed listening to gospel music, farming, spending time with his grandchildren and watching the Buckeyes and the Cleveland Indians.
On Nov. 28, 1957, Spike married Faye E. (Gardner) Tharp, who survives of the home. Also surviving are their children, Bert (Patty) Tharp of Tippecanoe and Vonda Hamilton of Uhrichsville; two sisters, Dora Torch of Dennison and Faye Finch of Barnhill; eight grandchildren, Jacob, Kristina and Caleb Tharp and Megan, Alex, Brianna, Samantha and Emma Hamilton; numerous nieces and nephews including a special niece, Carol Dunn of New Philadelphia. In addition to his parents, Spike is preceded in death by his four brothers, Richard, Robert, Harold and Donald Tharp and five sisters, Mary Scott, Marjorie Hanni, Betty Miller, Norma Scott and Sandra Tharp.
Funeral services for Spike will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 at the Rush Community Church of the Nazarene in Uhrichsville with the Rev. Brett Warkintine officiating. Burial will follow at West Union Cemetery with the Tuscarawas VFW #7943 conducting military graveside services. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville. The Freeport Masonic Lodge will hold services at 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rush Community Church of the Nazarene, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department and Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County.
