Anderson, Charles J. ALBANY Charles J. "Chazz-Man" Anderson, formerly of Watervliet, died peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Stratton V.A. Medical Center in Albany with his family at his side. Born in Troy on May 31, 1926, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Catherine Loughlin Anderson. Charlie attended Watervliet High School, and at the age of 17 in 1943 at the height of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was trained in Parris Island, S.C. and was part of the first wave of Marines to invade Okinawa. He was wounded twice in action and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He was proud to be a 100% service-connected Disabled American Veteran and was a proud U.S. Marine! He was employed by the Watervliet Arsenal for more than 40 years as a quality control inspector before retiring in 1986. He was a very popular and animated baseball umpire in the Albany area for more than 40 years. He also was a soccer referee for more than 20 years. Charlie was a huge sports fan, showing his allegiance to the New York Yankees, New York Giants and for the Irish of Notre Dame. Charlie was a member of the Watervliet VFW Post 729, a former member of the Watervliet Elks and a former communicant of Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Albany. He was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth M. Zenzen Anderson who died in 2003; loving father of Charles E. (Karen) Anderson of Albany and Geraldine A. (David) Mitchell of Loudonville; proud grandfather of Patrick Anderson and Emily Mitchell; dear brother of William (Eileen) Anderson of Watervliet; brother-in-law of Frederick J. (Anne) Zenzen of Rensselaer and the late Edward J. (late Dorothy) Zenzen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Monday, December 2, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St., Albany. Interment with military honors will be in Our Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Glenmont. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Stratton V.A.
