Hume, George W. "Red" COHOES George W. "Red" Hume, 89, of Rose Ct. in Cohoes died Monday, September 23, 2013 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany embraced by his loving family. Born in Cohoes, he was the son of the late Raymond D. and Dorilda Bordeaux Hume, Sr. and beloved wife of Lois M. Root Hume, of Cohoes whom he married in 1947. George was a life long Cohoes resident. He graduated from Cohoes High School and received his bachelor's degree in materials engineering from Siena College. He was a distinguished and talented basketball player in high school continued his athletic career playing with the professional Cohoes Mastodons team. George was a proud World War II Marine Corps veteran and saw action in the South Pacific. He worked with General Electric and also with Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory as a metallurgist where he worked on nuclear power plant core development specializing in zirconium and Hafnium materials, earning him two patents. On June 13, 1947 George was appointed Cohoes Recreation commissioner where he had the opportunity to develop new programs and improve the city's facilities. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed all kinds of sports, hunting and fishing. But his true enjoyment came from the abundant love of family and friends. George was a member of the NRA, American Legion and the Elks. He was a devout communicant of the former St. Bernard's Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Pamela J. (Charles) Phelps of Ariz., Patricia A. (Matthew) Grovenger of Cohoes, Brandie M. Wentworth of Bethlehem and Raymond J. (Serafina) Hume of Albany; adored grandchildren, Stephanie (Scott) Cerasano, Sarah Phelps, Phillip J. Hume, Steven J (Elena) Grovenger, Sheri A. (Michael) Frueh, Krista N. (finance Chris Meyers) Wentworth, Kelly M. and Katherine M. Wentworth; treasured great- grandchildren, Vika, Alex and Cameron and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Davidson T. Hume and brother, Raymond D. Hume, Jr., M.D. Funeral from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ltd., 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes, Friday morning at 8:30. Mass of Christian Burial from the Church of the Holy Trinity at 9 o'clock. Interment with military honors will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Cohoes. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
