Hungerford, Lawrence Paul ALBANY Lawrence Paul Hungerford passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2013 with his family at his bedside. Larry was 77 years old. Devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, classmate, friend, neighbor he will truly be missed. A gentle, quiet man who preferred to be in the background, he was always available when needed, and his easygoing nature and dependable presence was treasured by family and friends. Larry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce Althiser Hungerford. Loving father of his son, Scott Hungerford and his wife Deidre (Goca), and his daughter Julie and her husband Brian Gutknecht. Very proud grandfather of Brendan and Kayla Hungerford, and Meghan, Joshua and Kevin Gutknecht. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Wilbur Hungerford and Estelle Boshea. Larry is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Charles Reardon and brother-in-law, James O'Connor. He was predeceased by sisters, Joyce O'Connor and Dawn Stillman. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A graduate of Watervliet High School, Larry remained a close friend of his classmates and enjoyed their weekly breakfast gathering. Larry joined the Army after graduation and was stationed in Landstuhl, Germany as a military police officer. Upon returning home, he found employment at Behr-Manning in Watervliet and was a loyal and dependable employee for 25 years and then worked at the Albany Housing Authority for 15 years. As a proud grandfather, he was his grandkids' No. 1 fan, traveling from one game location to another across the Capital District in a given day. He was an avid golfer who loved playing the hills of Albany Muni from opening day till the day that frost would close the course. He bowled with the City Line Bowling League for nearly 50 years. He also was a devoted fan and season ticket holder of the Siena basketball team. Larry enjoyed the family trips to York and Ogunquit beaches in Maine. Nothing delighted him more than having his coffee while walking the beach in the early morning. Relatives and friends may call at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen St., Albany on Sunday, December 22, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 in the funeral home. Interment, St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Sand Creed Road, Colonie.
