Kurkland, Martha FT. MYERS, Fla. Martha Kurland, born June 27, 1925, in Pendleton, Ind. passed away October 10, 2013 in Ft. Myers. Her parents were Ruth and Frederick Bryan Wishard, M.D. She graduated from Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. She earned her master's degree in history at the University of Michigan and was working on her PhD when she met her husband, Norman Kurland of Detroit, Mich. They were married in 1951 and spent their initial year in the Netherlands where Norman wrote his doctoral dissertation. She is survived by her husband; her sister, Mary W. McDougall; three children, Margaret, Midian and Alexandra; two granddaughters, Aurora and Sienna, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Alice W. Rowen and Florence W. Clair. Martha spent most of her adult life in Delmar where her husband worked in Albany at the New York State Education Department. She was a creative weaver and gardener, an avid collector of antiques, and fine American hand crafts. After the children were older she expanded on these interests by opening The Shuttle Hill Herb Shop which she ran for twenty years. Through the shop she became a patron of some of the major crafts people in the Northeast. Martha and her husband traveled widely in the US and Europe. Her favorite destinations were England and Santa Fe, N.M. After retirement she and her husband spent many winters in Sanibel, Fla. They moved in 2000 to Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers. Memorials may be sent to her favorite charity, CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitatin of Wildlife) on Sanibel. Arrangements have been entrusted to National Cremation & Burial Society of North Ft. Myers.
