Charron, Nelson CHATHAM Nelson Charron, 87, of Chatham, died Monday, November 19, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Frank and Ida (Therrien) Charron of Chatham and was born in Pittsfield, Mass. on October 7, 1925, later moving to Chatham in 1935. He was a 1942 graduate of Chatham High School, where he excelled in baseball and football, a fact which led to his induction into the CHS Hall of Fame in 2008. Following high school, Mr. Charron served in the Army during World War II. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and was held as a Prisoner of War for five months before being released upon the end of the War. He worked as a butcher at Archer's Market in Chatham, later opening Charron's Market, a store which he owned with his son Wallace and ran for 40 years. He was an avid golfer and achieved a record eight holes in one during his career. He was a charter member of the Winding Brook Country Club in Valatie. Mr. Charron was a lifetime member of the Chatham Fire Department, and a member of American Legion Post 42 and the Ghent VFW, where he proudly served for 50 years. He was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Chatham, N.Y. Mr. Charron was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Margaret 'Midge' (Van Buren) Charron. They had two sons, Wallace and David. He is also predeceased by his wife of two years, Lois (Palmer) Charron; brothers, Wallace and Leonard Charron; and his grandson, Timothy Charron. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wallace and Joan Charron of North Carolina; a son David; two sisters, Claire Lashway of Florida and Carol Tuczinski of Chatham; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Mary Charron of Florida and Ronald and Sally Charron of Ghent; four grandchildren, Jim Charron of North Carolina, Vince, Rosie and Nelson Charron of N.Y.; 12 great-grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 4-7 on Sunday, November 25 at the Wenk Funeral Home in Chatham. Services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, November 26 at the St. James Church in Chatham. Interment will be at the St. James Cemetery in Ghent.
