Mertz, Otto DELMAR Otto Mertz of Delmar passed away on October 23, 2013 - just 19 days short of his 90th birthday. He was born on November 11, 1923 in Newark, N.J. Otto was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Coast Guard from 1943-1946 on North Atlantic convoy duty on the DE Kirkpatrick and LST minesweeping duty off Nagasaki, Japan. He was a graduate of Colgate University in 1950, earned a master's in education from Harvard University in 1952 and an MS in city planning from Columbia University in 1959. He spent 27 years with New York State in statewide and regional planning and retired in 1988. He loved history and learning and enjoyed sharing his learning with others. He will be sorely missed by his wife, Ursula; daughter, Linda (Paul Partridge) and grandson, Christopher; his brother, John (Ann) and their children and grandchildren. His cousins and friends loved him dearly. He was a gentle man. Friends may call on Saturday, October 26 for a gathering of memories from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
