Diedrich, Richard SCHENECTADY Richard Charles "Dick" Diedrich, 86, of Schenectady died peacefully Sunday, September 22, 2013. He was born in 1927 to the late Clyde and Mildred Diedrich of Tonawanda. In the mid 1940's the family moved to Piseco, N.Y. in the Adirondacks and Dick joined the Air Force during World War II. After serving his country Dick worked in the family business, Clyde's Restaurant, and for the Town of Arietta. He took the janitor's position at the Piseco School when it opened in 1950. While at the school Dick met his soon to be wife Anne Miller, a teacher at the school, they married in 1952. He left Piseco after a few years and earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics at Buffalo State College (in three years) and returned to the Adirondacks to teach at the Piseco School and then Wells High School. Dick received his master's degree and then his PhD in mathematics education, both from Syracuse University. He started his career at Buffalo State College in 1964, first teaching mathematics and then as an administrator. After an early retirement, he ran the computer department at Bishop's Welding Supply in Tampa, Fla. before returning to his roots in New York (Piseco and Schenectady) in 2002. Dick is survived by Anne, his loving wife of 61 years, of Schenectady; son, Alan (Beth) of Schenectady; daughter, Barbara of Atlanta, Ga.; grandsons, Russell of Norfolk, Va. and Samuel of Schenectady; brother, Robert of Schenectady; sister, Barbara Parslow (Gordon) of Piseco; brother-in-law, Archie Miller (Bobbie) of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde, and sisters-in-law, Rena and Helen of Piseco. He was a devoted husband and father and a loving and fun grandfather, with a sense of humor, sweet tooth, imagination, and endless curiosity that will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at the Lake Pleasant Methodist Church, Lake Pleasant, N.Y. on Saturday, October 5 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mathematics Department Fund for a scholarship in the memory of Dr. Richard Diedrich.
