Smith, William J. "Bill" TROY William J. "Bill" Smith, 88, of Troy, passed away May 4, 2013 at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late William Smith Sr. and Kathryn Donnelly Smith and the husband of the late Thelma Fritz Smith. Bill graduated from Troy High School and entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 88th Infantry Division in Italy during World War II. He earned the EAMET Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He had been employed as a salesman for the Freihofer Baking Company, retiring after 35 years of service. Bill umpired baseball games for high schools, colleges and Little Leagues. He played baseball for the Troy Amateur Baseball League and the Emerald Athletic Club. Bill was inducted into the Edward C. Pickens Troy High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an avid Yankees fan and enjoyed golfing, reading, family, parties and dancing. He was a member of the Troy Elks Club, where he served as a trustee and was named Elk of the Year. He was also a member of the American Legion. Bill was a communicant of Saint Michael the Archangel Church and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Mark Zdunczyk; his sons-in-law, Al Deeb (Roseann) and Joseph Murphy; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, John Sheedy; and two nieces and two nephews. Bill was predeceased by two daughters, Lynn Smith Deeb and Deborah Smith Murphy; and his sisters, Eileen Vinette and Pat Miorin. The family wishes to thank the fourth floor staff at Samaritan Hospital for their care. The funeral will be 9 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013 from the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home, 510 Pawling Ave., at Parkview Court, Troy, and at 10 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. Donations may be made to St. Michael's Church Outreach Programs, 175 Williams Road, Troy, NY 12180.
