JONES Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com LCDR Alfred Al L. Jones, Jr., USN Retired, 83, passed peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2014, in Orange Park, FL. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Virginia, and two daughters, Deborah McCarragher (Thomas), of Fleming Island, FL, and Valerie Jones of Tallahassee, FL; one grandson, Capt. Sean McCarragher, USMC, of Norfolk, VA; and one great-granddaughter, Sydney McCarragher, of Jacksonville, FL. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel (Palmer) Jones and Alfred L. Jones, of Detroit, MI. He was born in Cleveland, OH, and graduated from Redford High School in 1948. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1953. He was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy and earned his Naval Aviator Wings of Gold on June 17, 1954. Memorable duty stations included the USS Forrestal; Naples, Italy (VR-24 Det); and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Following his retirement from the Navy in 1973, he earned a Master s degree from the University of North Florida and taught math at Orange Park High School, retiring in 1994. He was a partner in Belle-Ville Homes and did volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and the Red Cross as liaison officer at the Naval Hospital, NAS Jax. A memorial service and life celebration will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at the Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL, (904) 264-1233. A gathering will follow immediately at the Holiday Inn & Suites, Orange Park, on Wells Road. Internment will be at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the , the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation (Pensacola, FL), or the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Scholarship Fund (NE FL Chapter FL-18 ).
