Cook, loving father and husband, true friend and a man who loved his family, friends, church and life passed away on February 13, 2013 at age 84. Don was born in Moberly, Missouri, on February 5, 1929. He served in the Air Force during the Korean war and received both Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Florida. Don was the first woodshop Teacher at Forest High School in 1959, and was later a Guidance Counselor there. In 1965 the Cook family moved to Lake Worth, Florida and Don began a 21 year career at Palm Beach Junior College, mentoring many students and directing lives before retiring in 1986 as Director of Counseling Services. While in South Florida Don was elected to the South Lake Worth Inlet Commission and served as president of the South West Palm Beach Exchange Club. Upon retirement the Cooks spent 5 years in Murphy, N.C. returning to Jacksonville in 1991. The Cooks were Members of the Sunwheeler Camping Club, traveled extensively and spent two years with the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program, doing volunteer construction work at churches and youth camps throughout the U.S. Don was a charter member and Elder of the Hodges Blvd. Presbyterian Church and served as chairman of the Memorial Garden Committee and member of the Property Mission Team and helped design and build the Memorial Garden. A master woodcraftsman Don has left his creations talent and legacy in many places across the country as well as many homes where he freely gave his talent by building furniture, and toys for many friends and loved ones. His talents will be missed but most of all what will be missed is his loyalty, goodness, his giving and humble nature and ability to give unconditional and unselfish love to his family and friends. This was truly a good man. He will be terribly missed by his son Bob Cook, wife Mary Cook and many many friends and family who adored him. Visitation will be on Monday February 18th from 7-9 pm at Greenlawn Cemetery. A memorial Service and Celebration of Life will take place at 11am on Tuesday February 19th at Hodges Blvd. Presbyterian Church with grave side services held at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd. at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Memorial Garden fund at Hodges Blvd. Presbyterian Church 4140 Hodges Blvd. Jacksonville, Fl 32224, www.greenlawnjacksonville.com.
