He attended Purdue University and graduated from the University of Kentucky. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. He joined The Travelers Insurance Company in Jacksonville in 1962. In 1967 he started the Beere-Thompson Insurance Agency Inc. Darrell was an avid golfer having played on his college golf team. He was a member of many Country Clubs as golf was his passion. He served on the Board of Governors at Baymeadows Country Club for many years and was the Chairman of the Board of Governors in 1977. Darrell was very active in the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Jacksonville having served on the Board of Directors for many years and served as the President in 1979-1980. He was also voted Agent of the Year in 1980. Darrell brought the tournament back to Florida and served as the State Chairman for 3 years. Darrell was also very active in the Jacksonville Quarterback Club and served as President in 1987.
