GENTRY Mr. Frederick J. Rick Gentry, age 67, passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 23, 2012 at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Ricky, as everyone knew him, was born in Brunswick Georgia on October 22, 1945, son of the late Fred and Kathleen Aspinwall Gentry. At the age of 6 months, his family located to Fernandina Beach where his parents opened The Fernandina Dry Cleaners. After graduating from Fernandina Beach High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Base where he served until 1967. He was Honorably Discharged and entered California State University, graduating with Honors, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. Ricky remained at The California State University earning again, with Honors, a Masters Degree in Psychology. After completing his Bachelor and Masters Degrees, he enrolled at The California Graduate Institute of Psychology where he graduated again with Honors, with a Ph.D. in Psychology. While at Lemoore Naval Air Station, Ricky met David E. Fillet who had just completed his Medical training as a Surgeon. Ricky and David remained life long partners until Ricky s death, a period spanning 44 years of an inseparable relationship. Upon completing his education and training, Ricky entered the private practice of Clinical Psychology, sharing an office in the Marina Del Rey area in Los Angels, California with David. Ricky also had a second office in Hollywood, California where many of his patients were movie people and some of his former professors in Psychology. He practiced for 12 years but following a massive heart attack, he was forced to leave the stressful practice of Psychology and he became an avid Real Estate investor in Los Angeles, California, Palm Springs, California, and in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He built a shopping center in Palm Springs known as Gentry Plaza and encompassing an entire city block. Ricky had 3 personal residences, one in Fernandina, one in Palm Springs, and a large historical mansion in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. He enjoyed traveling from residence to residence but in later years, he claimed Fernandina Beach as his preferred Residence. On October 23, 2012, a week after having a Pacemaker/ Defibrillator implanted, he suffered an overwhelming case of Pneumonia, which claimed his life. As always, David was at his side when he passed away. In addition to his longtime companion, David, Rick leaves behind many friends and acquaintances.
