GLENDA DUNCAN Obituary
DUNCAN Glenda Duncan passed away on April 14, 2013. How do children capture the life and spirit of their mother? Glenda Sarah Highsmith Duncan never complained, always encouraged, and never got angry. She bathed, fed, took to school, waved goodbye to the rear window of three separate cars. Mom sent love across the miles, waiting for the return of her children, grandchildren and a great grandchild. Glenda was the essence of southern grace and strength; a life-long sweetheart to dad Grey Duncan of Detroit, MI. She loved us all as big as the whole universe ! A member of First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, charter member of the Reflections dance team and a member of the Red Hat Society. She was a fashion model, artist, decorator, designer of her parents home, seamstress, an expert on the ballroom dance floor, a reader of books, and writer of wisdom. Often at the moment one of us needed it most, a note would appear to uplift, guide, soothe or point the way, signed by Mom. She was also keeper of the family business books. Born July 17, 1933 in Jesup, Georgia, to James Leeron and Myrtle Blanche Highsmith, she was the eldest of two girls. She led the life of an adventurous country girl and eventually moved with her family to Savannah, where she attended Armstrong College. She transferred to and graduated from the University of Georgia as a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and as the new love of a young naval officer named Grey, who was stationed in Athens at the Supply Corp School. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jimmie Lee. Keeping Glenda in memory and in heart are her children: daughter Gay Duncan Wilson and son-in-law Don Wilson, of Geneva, AL, daughter Gini Duncan Tackett and son-in-law Larry Tackett, of Orlando FL, son Glen Alan Duncan and daughter-in-law Karen Heinemann Duncan of Baton Rouge, LA. Her grandchildren are Ryan Wilson of Orlando, FL, Lindsay Wilson Bray and husband Mike Bray of Geneva, AL, Taylor Grey Duncan and Hillary Addison Duncan of Baton Rouge, LA. Her great-granddaughter is Leighton Nicole Bray, of Geneva, AL. Glenda was also looking forward to welcoming a new grand-daughter-in-law into the family, Connelly Massie, of Orlando, FL. Our father, Grey, knew our mother first and best, and it was to him she spoke her last words before slipping off peacefully, surrounded by her family. We are sure it was of him she dreamed before being embraced by her heavenly father to wait patiently for their reunion. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin 11801 San Jose Blvd. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday April 18th at First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, 118 East Monroe Street. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, 11801 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32223. www.hgmandarin.com (904) 288-0025.
