Harold Chris MELONSON Obituary
MELONSON Harold Chris Melonson passed away on January 26, 2014. Mr. Melonson was born on August 21, 1930 in Westwego, Jefferson Parish (County), Louisiana which is across the river from New Orleans. He graduated from High School then joined the Marines in 1948. He was a machine-gunner with the Marines in the frozen Chosin in 1950 when he received the Silver Star for gallantry in combat and the Purple Heart for wounds. He served overseas in Guam, Japan, Korea, Okinawa and New Delhi, India. His last duty stations were in India HDQS.USMC and the War Room of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, where he met his endearing wife, Gerry; Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN, and finally at Camp Pendleton, California where he retired after 20 years of active duty in the Marine Corps. He immediately became Personnel Manager of the Navy Resale System-SE Region, at NAS Jax, FL where he served another 20 years before retiring after 40 years of government service. Mr. Melonson was a volunteer at the pharmacy of the Naval Hospital at NAS Jax, FL where he served for 23 years, as well as 10 years at the food bank. He served on the True Commission at City Hall and the Council on Elder Affairs for District 12. He was President of Westside Jax, AARP Chapter 4098; President of the Confederate Point Civic Association for 2 years where he was the prime-mover in the building of the Community Center. He was an active member of the Wesconnett Baptist Church. He was a lifetime member of all Masonic Bodies having served over 50 years; was an active Shriner of Morocco Temple Jax; and an active member of VFW Post 7909. He was a Gator Booster for nearly 40 years and was a member of the Gator Nation in Orange Park, FL. In his spare time, he became an advocate for promoting health care and financial security for all under AARP. Relatives include his loving wife, Gerry; a brother, Thurman and sister, Loretta Jane, both (predeceased) in the New Orleans area; and nephew, Tim Melonson. On Gerry's side of the family, a nephew, Collin Versich and his wife, Carol; a niece, Barbara, her husband, Vince, and their son, Brett; and his great niece, Hailey Danielle. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made in his name to Wesconnett Baptist Church, 5711 Wesconnett Blvd. Jax. Fl. 32244, or Morocco Shrine Temple, Po Box 16039 Jax. FL 32245. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hardage Giddens Blanding Funeral Home, 5753 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32244. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. with funeral immediately following at 10:00 a.m. at Hardage Giddens Blanding Funeral Home, 5753 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32244.
