BRYAN I. Emerson Bryan, Jr., age 97, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2014 in a local hospital. Having resided in Jacksonville for most of his life, he attended the public schools in Duval County, graduating from Stanton Sr. High School in 1936. Furthering his education, he received a Bachelor's degree from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in 1940, and earned a Masters degree from Penn State University. Mr. Bryan, a World War II Army Veteran, was united in holy matrimony to the late Mrs. Marie Redd Bryan. He was also predeceased by mother, Ms. Lucile Shropshire; father, I Emerson Bryan, Sr. and step-father, Robert Shropshire. As one of Duval County's Outstanding Educators, he was employed with the Duval County School Board retiring after rendering over 37 years of dedicated service. Mr. Bryan taught Graphic Arts and Industrial Arts at Old Stanton, New Stanton and William M. Raines Sr. High Schools. Other affiliations include the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. (Jacksonville Chapter) and former member of the Royal Vagabonds Club, Inc. Survivors include his son, I. Emerson Bryan, III (Gloria); grandchildren, Ms. Erica Bryan and Creighton Bryan (Marquetta); great grandchildren, Campbell, Carrington, and Clayborne Bryan; brothers-in-law, James Redd (Gertrude) and Carl Peal; a number of other relatives and friends. FUNERAL SERVICES for Mr. Bryan will be held at 11AM, SATURDAY, March 1, 2014 in the Rufus E. Payne Memorial Chapel of the mortuary, with Rev. Bernard Wright, officiating. Mr. Bryan will rest in the mortuary for visitation of friends on Saturday, March 1. 2014 from 9AM until the hour of service. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery.
