BLACKWELL James R. Blackwell, 92, of Atlantic Beach, FL passed away on March 19, 2013. He was born on October 28, 1920 in Bedford, IN to the late Rollie and Elfie Blackwell. He graduated from Wiley High School, Terre Haute, IN and obtained his B.S. degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, M.A. degree from University of Louisville, Louisville, KY and M.B.A. degree from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. James had a very successful military career. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps from 1941-1965, and retired with the rank of Colonel. He held various command and staff assignments during his service, retiring from his last assignment as a member of the faculty of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Fort McNair, Washington D.C. During WW II, he served overseas in the Far East, the Korean War, and participated in campaigns in the Pacific Area- Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima and occupation of Japan. James was awarded the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star with combat V . After serving in the US Marine Corps, he held a faculty and administrative position at Purdue University -North Central Campus for 24 years, from 1965-1989. During this time, he was actively involved in community organizations. He retired as Head, Community College Section, and was appointed Professor Emeritus of Purdue University upon retirement on June 30, 1989. He also was President of the Management Consulting Company, Blackwell and Associates, Inc., Michigan City, IN from 1969-1993. In later years, the company specialized in law enforcement activities and he was certified as an Instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy from 1970-1990. James moved to Wesley Chapel, FL from IN in 1992 and then to Fleet Landing Continuing Care Community, Atlantic Beach, FL in 2003. His organization memberships included Military Officers Association of America, Marine Corps Association, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Family members include his loving wife Betty M. Blackwell (married in 2003); daughter, Vicki Blackwell Morrison (Joseph) of Jamison, PA; granddaughter, Melissa Morrison Charko (Quinton) of Saskatchewan, Canada; sister, Claire Whaley of Bellaire, Texas; stepdaughters, Susan M. Scott of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Jane E. Newell of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey Cason Blackwell and his brother, Mark A. Blackwell. James will be laid to rest at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, March 27th in Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, VA, with full honors.
