JAMES YONGE Obituary
YONGE Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com James E. Yonge, Jr. was born in Miami Beach, FL on January 12, 1932 to James Ernest Yonge and Margaret Reeves Delany Yonge. Jim enjoyed an idyllic youth at the beach and in the sun, attending North Beach Elementary and Miami Beach High School. He graduated from high school at The Hill School in Pottstown, PA in 1950. Stetson University in Deland, FL was Jim s next adventure, where he excelled in football and basketball, and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Amazingly, he graduated in four years in 1954 with a BS in Business Administration, and then pursued law school. Jim graduated from the University of Florida Law School in 1957, began practicing law in Miami, and relocated to Orange Park, FL to form Scruby & Yonge in 1958. After 21 years of real estate practice, Jim returned to South Florida in 1979 to become Chairman of the Board and legal counsel to North Ridge Bank. Jim was summoned to Washington, DC by President Ronald Reagan to serve as Director of the Export-Import Bank of the United States during President Reagan s first term. The sweet smell of Bar-B-Q lured Jim back to South Florida, and he ran numerous Sonny s restaurants in multiple counties while also managing other eclectic business ventures and serving as a national board member and active participant in Young Life. Jim served on the vestry at St. Marks Episcopal Church and was later active in Christ Church United Methodist Church. Jim loved to remind us that God is Love. Desiring to rest and return to the beach, Jim retired and moved to Jacksonville Beach in 2007. Boating, doodling, second-guessing Wall Street, running the free world from his blue arm chair, and playing with his rescue dog Bear filled Jim s days. He never tired of telling salty stories, bursting out with a hearty laugh, or enrapturing others with his infectious personality. Jim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Vanda Lee Yonge, his brother Phil Yonge, his predeceased daughter Karen Yonge Carr, daughters Margi Yonge Baker and Beth Yonge Strauss, and sons Jimmy Yonge, John Yonge, Briton Yonge and Chris Trent, along with seven beautiful grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at the Quinn Shalz Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 18, 2013 followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial donation is requested to be given to NSCJ Young Life, P.O. Box 3257, Ponte Vedra, FL 32004. Please visit our online Tribute at www.quinn-shalz.com.
