HOFFREN Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Dr. James Axel Hoffren, 83, passed away in Jacksonville, FL on July 29, 2014. He was born on December 18, 1930, in Cloquet, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents Olga and Axel Hoffren, step-father Ernest Tafs, and sisters, Shirley Simonson and Beverly Hand. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cindy Hoffren, children Todd Hoffren (Debbie), Laura Holmstrom (Lyle), granddaughter Elise Holmstrom, nieces and nephews Denny Simonson, Patricia Simonson, Kristina Park and Melanie Dudley. Jim was a talented musician, having played the trumpet since the age of 10. He received bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Minnesota and Eastman School of Music and his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Illinois. He taught at the college level and retired from Jacksonville University after 30 years as a professor and chairman of the Division of Music. Jim also played first trumpet in many symphony orchestras, including the Jacksonville Symphony, which had concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. At retirement Jim and Cindy moved to their dream home in St. Augustine, FL. They had been traveling in their Winnebago motor home since 1978, and taking multiple cruises to unique ports around the world. Jim and Cindy truly loved their years together. Their song was My Cup Runneth Over with Love. As per Jim s wishes, there will be no service, with memorialization by cremation. Donations in Jim s memory to Mayo Clinic Development Office, Alzheimer s Research, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224, OR to Jacksonville University (for music scholarships) Office of the President, Attn: Delores Starr, 2800 University Blvd. North, Jacksonville, Florida 32211.
