A licensed commercial pilot, he was the founder and commander of the Jacksonville Search and Rescue Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and also served as the commanding officer of the Air Force's public information squadron for North Florida and South Georgia. He also served in the National Defense Executive Reserve for 22 years, with assignment to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He was founder and president of the Police Council, a local law enforcement assistance group, a research analyst for the U.S. Civil Defense Council, a correspondent for national magazines and newspapers, and a federally licensed firearms dealer.
