EBERT John Thomas Ebert May 23, 1938 - March 8, 2014 John Thomas Ebert, 75, of Hickory, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 following a brief illness. John was born on May 23, 1938, in Jacksonville, FL, to John Leslie Ebert and Belma Payne Ebert. He graduated from Alfred I. DuPont High School in Jacksonville, then attended the University of Florida, graduating with a bachelor s degree in journalism. There he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and in Army ROTC. Upon graduation, John was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, later assigned to Adjutant General School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. Following his Army service, he was employed in sales at Dixon Powdermaker Furniture Company in Jacksonville, FL. For over 40 years, John was employed in the furniture industry, being well-regarded and rising to prominent national and international sales positions in various companies. He retired from Hickory Chair Furniture Company in North Carolina in 2003. John is survived by John K. McIver, his partner of 49 years. They were avid art collectors and donated several collections to museums throughout the country. He is also survived by: his sister, Susanne Ebert Winton of Franklin, NC; three nephews - Steven L. Winton (and his wife Tracey) of Fleming Island, FL; Thomas R. Winton (and his wife Robin) of Raleigh, NC; and Randolph J. Winton (and his wife Elizabeth) of Tallahassee, FL; six great-nieces and one great-nephew; and numerous cousins and dear friends. In keeping with John s wishes, there will be no funeral services.
