Leonard Virgil (Lindy) Appling Sr. Obituary
APPLING Leonard Virgil Appling, Sr. (Lindy), 87, passed away at his home in Middleburg on August 11 after an extended illness. Born in Fresno, CA as the second-youngest of nine children, Lindy joined the Navy in 1943 and was stationed at NAS Jacksonville, where he served on the first aircraft carrier deployed to the Mediterranean after WWII. After his military service, he earned a name for himself as a piano tuner for the greater Jacksonville area. He was an elder and music director at North Shore Christian Church in Jacksonville until his retirement, where he resumed those same roles at Keystone Heights Christian Church. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Neta; his three sons Leonard, Jr. (Buster) and Bruce, both of Middleburg, and Mike, of Keystone Heights; his brother Elmer of Versailles, KY; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled through Eternity Funeral Home, and homegoing services will be at the First Baptist Church of Middleburg, 2645 Blanding Boulevard, at 11:00am Friday, August 15. He will be buried with full military honors and interred Jacksonville National Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lakeside Cove Project at North Florida Christian Camp in Keystone Heights, Florida (www.nfcsc.org).
