SHIRLEY Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Mary Lou Shirley Lou Shirley, 81, passed away on April 15, 2014 after a brief illness. She was a long-term survivor from endometrial and lung cancers, diabetes and stroke. These major health issues did not stop her. She is survived by her three children Thomas, John and Marilyn McIntyre. She is also survived by her sister, Sue Rhea. She is predeceased by her father, Glen Adkins; mother, Enid Riley; sister, Jane Williams; brother, Tom Adkins and husbands Kenneth McIntyre and Billy Shirley. Lou was born in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from the Ohio State University with a bachelor s degree in education. She taught school in Charleston, South Carolina and ran her own kindergarten in Jacksonville, Florida. She left the field of education to work as a social worker. This was her calling, and she loved to help the many individuals that she touched over the years. She was a social worker in Jacksonville, Florida and Nashville, Tennessee. She retired from the state of Tennessee as a social worker. Upon her retirement, she permanently relocated to Tarpon Springs, Florida. Lou was a long time member of the Church on the Bayou and served in many capacities. Lou loved doing volunteer work. She served at the Shepherd Center and Suncoast Hospice. After her stroke, the rehabilitation case manager asked about her hobbies. Lou said she didn t have any hobbies but loved doing volunteer work. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 21, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Dobies Funeral Home, 701 E Tarpon Ave, Tarpon Springs, FL, 34689. In lieu of flowers, donations to Suncoast Hospice in her honor are appreciated.
