Mignon Thayer "Tis" UPCHURCH Obituary
UPCHURCH On Friday, January 31, 2014, Mignon Thayer Tis Upchurch (Mrs. Frank Upchurch), 86, died peacefully surrounded by her family following a brief illness. Mrs. Upchurch, the daughter of Admiral and Mrs. Louis M. Thayer, was born in Irvington, NJ, on August 13, 1927. She and her husband, the late Judge Frank D. Upchurch Jr., who died in October 2012, were long-time residents of St. Augustine, FL.. Mrs. Upchurch is survived by her daughter Mignon Dee Beranek and Dee s husband, John, along with Dee s daughter, Mignon Sarah Brockenbrough, and Sarah s husband, Will; her son, Frank D. Upchurch III and Frank s wife, Katherine, and their children, Will Jones, Susan and Katherine; her daughter, Robin Allen and Robin s husband, Dr. Stephen Allen, and Steve s sons Baxter and Ashley Crane, Crane s wife Eileen, and their son Jack; and her son Kramer T. Upchurch and Kramer s wife, Sandy, and their daughter Sydney. She is also survived by her brother retired Army Colonel Raymond E. Thayer, and her sisters Joanna T. Ross and Karen T. Sarff. Tis met her husband Frank in St. Augustine during World War II while her father was stationed there with the Coast Guard and Frank was home on medical leave recuperating from a plane crash. After the war, they renewed their acquaintance in San Francisco. They married in January 1948 and settled in the Bay Area where their four children were born. In 1959 they returned to Florida so that Frank could attend the University of Florida School of Law. After his graduation in 1962 they made their home in St. Augustine. Mrs. Upchurch was a long time member of the Neal Neighborhood House Advisory Board. She also served on the advisory board of Trinity Episcopal Learning Center of Trinity Episcopal Parish for a number of years. She was an active supporter of Flagler College and the Webb School in Bellbuckle, Tennessee. She was devoted to her family and friends and enjoyed creating a warm and loving home, which she frequently opened for charitable events. Tis was a thoughtful, supportive, and attentive friend; everyone who knew her appreciated her wit, wisdom, and sunny optimism. She was adventurous and loved traveling, photography, good music, and life on the Intracoastal Waterway. She will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Upchurch s memory may be to the Northeast Florida Community Hospice, the Neal Neighborhood House, or Flagler College. Plans for a memorial service will be announced. Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
