GARD Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com CDR Perry W. Gard, III, US Navy Retired, 76, of Orange Park died May 24, 2014. Born May 31, 1937 in Washington DC to the late CPT Perry W. Gard, II and Dorothy Copeland. As a child of a Flight Surgeon he attended 16 different schools throughout his school years, graduating in 1954 from Pensacola High School. He went on to study at Tulane University where he met and married the late Jane Chapman Nichols. To this union were born 3 children, Perry, Pam and DD. He Graduated from Tulane University in 1958 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Political Science. He immediately joined the US Navy and began to live his dream to fly airplanes. Little did he know the path of his Navy career would be filled with color and rewarding moments. During his time in the Navy he was awarded many honors which included Air Medal with Gold Star, Air Medal Strike Flight/10 Awards, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba) and (Korea), Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross). His Naval career was highlighted by a tour as Commanding Officer of a carrier-based jet bombing squadron (VA86). He was acknowledged by Time Magazine for his courageous action during the fire aboard the USS Enterprise in 1969 whereby he saved many lives. Upon his retirement in 1979 he became the cofounder of a company that held service contracts for the armed forces and at one point employed over 400 people. After five years with that company he joined McDonnell- Douglas where he managed the maintenance contract for the C17 aircraft. He continued to work there for 10 years before his final retirement to Orange Park Florida. He is survived by one son Perry Bill W. Gard IV, (Sara) of Peachtree City, GA, two daughters, Pamela L. Castellana (Craig) of Melbourne, FL and Dorothy DD Barker (Kevin) of Derry, NH. 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 3:00 PM at the Orange Park Presbyterian Church, 1905 Park Avenue, Orange Park, FL , Rev. Susan Takis Officiating. Graveside Services will be held Monday, June 2, 2014 at 9:30 AM at the Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd, Pensacola, FL with Full Military Honors.
