Philip Abood Obituary
ABOOD Philip Joseph Abood, 80, a Jacksonville native, died on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at his home in St. Augustine. Dr Abood was preceded in death by his parents Alice and Isaar N. Richard Abood. He served honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 1951 - 1954. He graduated from Georgetown University and Georgetown University Dental School. In 1961 he moved his family to Jacksonville to open his dental practice marking the beginning of 45 years of dedication to his patients, their families and the Jacksonville community. During this time he served on the Georgetown Dental Alumni Board, the Board of Governors, and he was a member of the American Dental Association, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and a distinguished recipient of the Apollonian Award. He co-authored one of the first software programs for Dental Office Management, was vice-chair of the Fl Dental Association Peer Review, chairman of the Jacksonville Medical Center Division of Dentistry General Practice Residency for the University Of Florida College Of Dentistry. Dr Abood was the founder of the Jacksonville Dental Mutual Aid Society. He was instrumental in introducing and educating dentists in Fl on the use of nitrous oxide as a form of sedation. Dr Abood was a 4th degree Knight with Our Lady Queen of the Knights Assembly 2679, a Eucharistic minister, and a faithful servant of the Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 59 years, Patricia, St. Augustine. He is also survived by his children, Peter (Debi) Abood, Wichita, KS, Dr. Mark (Theresa) Abood, Jacksonville, Trish (Kirt) Wightman, Hoschton, GA, Stephany (Earle) Lantz, St. Augustine, Laura (Greg) den Boef, Jacksonville; two sisters, Barbara Sledjeski, Centreville, VA, Rosemary Lyon, Mansfield, CT; 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday August 31, 2011 at San Jose Catholic Church. A visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. will precede the services. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers and Community Hospice of NE Florida for the loving care they gave him. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 and Downs Syndrome Association of Jacksonville, 1050 North Davis Street, Jacksonville, Fl 32209.
